Career Closeup: Newspaper Sports Editor

Position Description: The Sports Editor manages all editorial content related to sports. He or she reports directly to the managing editor or assistant managing editor. The Sports Editor writes columns and articles, and also edits copy from a team of sports writers.
The Sports Editor ensures appropriate coverage of all professional sporting events. It is also important that he or she develop direct relationships with local high school, college, and community sports teams and their coaches to ensure proper coverage of their events, as well.

Education and Training: A bachelor's degree is required; recommended majors include English, journalism, communications, sport science or liberal arts. A graduate degree or journalism coursework is also recommended. Experience gained through campus newspapers or summer journalism internships is desirable.

Salaries: Salaries can vary widely and depend on the size and circulation of the newspaper. Nationally, these salaries range from $45, 000 for papers with a circulation of 50, 000 to $65, 000 and higher for larger papers.
